Mission Statement

The Sweet Pea Foundation

To serve children and young adults who directly suffer from a mental or physical disability and to provide support for children who are orphaned.

Our Story

Don and Elizabeth Munson since 1991 have seen first-hand the struggles of a child with special needs. Their daughter, Michelle, was diagnosed with Congenital Muscular Dystrophy before she was even 12 hours old. Michelle, or “Sweet Pea”, spent the first two weeks of her life in neo-natal care receiving her first session of physical therapy in her first 24 hours of life. In April of 1995 Sweet Peas was diagnosed with autism. The dual diagnosis doctors said made Michelle one of less than 20 children in the entire United States impacted by both infirmities. As Michelle enters her 33 rd year of life she continues to receive physical, occupational, swim and equestrian therapies. Don and Elizabeth also have a heart for orphaned children. They were in the process of adopting a child when Elizabeth became pregnant with Michelle in 1991. Knowing what has been faced within their own household the decision was made to form the Sweet Pea Foundation.
